About Hydro Logic

Hydro Logic is a monumental sculpture created by Seattle-based artist Beliz Brother for the Helen Sommers Building.

Brother based each section’s design on data about the people, history, and natural resources of the watershed area. She notes, "The artwork harnesses and explodes with the energy of one of our greatest natural resources: water. It honors the history of our state — from the names of our original Native American tribes to our agricultural heritage, to our location on the Northwest Coast of the United States. It recognizes our industries of fishing, shipping and forestry, our beauty, our recreational activities and the very importance of water to all life."

Brother created the sculpture entirely from aluminum. She bent, formed, and powder-coated each aluminum piece to represent the color and flow of water.

Brother creates site-specific public art installations. Her abstract artworks are inspired by complex natural processes and systems of interaction.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with the Department of Enterprise Services.
