About the ghost forest
ghost forest is etched on glass around the House Meeting Room in the Joel Pritchard Building. It also appears on the glass of smaller meetings rooms in the building's main floor.
ghost forest is a grace note to holding up the sky, the exterior bronze artwork. Where holding up the sky is bold, ghost forest is subtle. Both pieces are inspired by the forests of the Pacific Northwest.
Artists Jacqueline Metz and Nancy Chew created both ghost forest and holding up the sky, playing with the ideas of mirroring and perception. They have been creating art together since 1997.
Metz grew up in northern British Columbia. She camped, built forts, and enjoyed nature. She became interested in shapes, colors, textures, patterns, and shadows moving across stone.
Chew is a first-generation Chinese Canadian. She grew up on Vancouver Island near the Cowichan Tribes. She learned to understand different cultures and ways of thinking, including Western, Chinese, and Indigenous traditions.
