Crew to prune oak tree outside Helen Sommers Building

What: A work crew will remove dead wood and trim limbs in an oak tree outside the Helen Sommers Building.

When: Thursday, Aug. 29, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Where: South side of the Helen Sommers Building (106 11th Ave. SW), near the corner of Capitol Way South and 11th Avenue Southwest.

Why: Dead limbs and branches could hurt people or damage property when they fall.

Impact: Equipment will occupy the northernmost lane of 11th Avenue SW. Vehicles heading west on 11th Avenue will be rerouted into the center lane; eastbound vehicles will occupy the right lane.

Dead tree on East Plaza will be removed

What: Removal of a dead tree.

Where: East Campus Plaza, northwest of Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Building.

When: Thursday, Aug. 29, 8 a.m - 2 p.m.

Impacts: Noise from chainsaw, chipper, compact loader.

The tree stands atop the Plaza Parking Garage. Because the garage roof can't bear heavy vehicles, the contractor will transport the trunk, limbs, and branches in a compact loader to a staging area west of the Korean War Memorial. There, the crew will chip the branches and limbs and load the trunk for disposal.

To divert pedestrians, the contractor will secure the work zone with cones, signs, and barricades at all walkways.
