What to expect today through Saturday, May 3
Planned events on Capitol Campus include a community walk, memorial ceremony, and May Day rallies.
Several events are planned today through Saturday, May 3, prompting hundreds of visitors and affecting streets and parking.
National Day of Prayer
Where: North steps of the Legislative Building, Rotunda
When: Thursday, May 1, 8 a.m. – 9 p.m.
More information: Day of Prayer takes place on the north steps 12-2 p.m.
Concert takes place in the Rotunda 7-8:30 p.m. Organizers expect 300 attendees.
Impacts: During the afternoon event, some participants will be carrying decommissioned firearms.
Peace Officers Memorial and Medal of Honor Ceremony
When: Friday, May 2, 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. Event takes place 4-6 p.m.
Where: Law Enforcement Memorial, on Water Street northeast of the Temple of Justice.
Impacts: The following parking areas will close:
- North and South Diagonals
- GA Visitor Lot
- Parking stalls on Water Street, north of the Temple of Justice
The following streets will close:
- Water Street north of the Temple of Justice
- North and South Diagonals
Due to the nature of the event, expect a large and visible presence by uniformed law enforcement.
At approximately 5 p.m., an honor guard will fire a 21-gun salute.
During the day, the honor guard may fire practice rounds.
More information: This event honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and those receiving a Medal of Honor. Organizers expect 200 attendees.
Paws 4 a Cause
Where: Heritage Park
When: Saturday, May 3, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Event runs 12-3 p.m.
Impacts: The Fifth Avenue parking lot will be closed for the event. A portion of Water Street, from Fifth Avenue to Legion Way, will also be closed.
More information: This dog-friendly walk raises funds for the American Cancer Society and the Animal Cancer Foundation. Organizers expect at least 350 attendees.
May Day March and Fair
Where: West Capitol Campus and Sylvester Park
When: Saturday, May 3, 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Event runs 12-4 p.m.
Impacts: Adjacent to Sylvester Park, Washington Street will be closed for food trucks. Expect possible traffic impacts on campus and along Capitol Way during the march.

- Water Street
- Cherry Street
- Sid Snyder west of Cherry Lane
- Pleasant Lane
